Obituary of Eleni Vavas

After a long and courageous battle with stomach cancer Dr. Eleni Vavas née Doufekias fell sleep in The Lord on Tuesday July 1st, 2014. Eleni grew up in Marlboro, NY where she graduated from Marlboro High School and was the first student from Marlboro to attend Cornell University from which she graduated with distinction. As a sophomore at Cornell, Eleni was accepted to SUNY Upstate Medical University through the early assurance program. After medical school, Eleni completed her residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. Following her residency Eleni served as a Chief Fellow while completing her Cardiology Fellowship at NYU Medical Center, when she married John D. Vavas. Eleni then went on to work as an Assistant Professor and Director of Echocardiography at North Shore University Hospital until her passing. In all of her life’s accomplishments Eleni was most proud of her role as a mother to her 3 year old son Zachary. Her parents Zachary and Voula Doufekias. Her sister and brother in law Spyridoula and James Adanuncio. Her sister, brother in law and nephew Niki and Demetrios Dounis and son Peter. Her in laws Daniel and Sue Vavas. Her brother in law, sister in law, godson and niece James and Vicky Vavas and children Daniel and Chryssa. And countless family and friends.
