Obituary of James E. Sharkey

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James E. Sharkey was born on April 22, 1935 to Irish immigrants Josephine (Harbinson) and James Sharkey.  He grew up in Astoria, Queens, attended St. Joseph’s School and later LaSalle Academy, and met and fell in love with Catherine, known to all her loved her as Honey. Our mom and dad grew up doors away from each other, and the foundations of their bond began when they were 15 and 17 respectively. After marriage, Dad built a career in marine sales with Exxon, performing service in the  Air Force Reserve, attending classes at St. John’s, and with our mother raising two daughters. Times were challenging, but their commitment to marriage remained strong.

In later years, James enjoyed new roles as a volunteer fire fighter, and later on as a Commissioner with Manhasset Lakeville Water District. Dad enjoyed his retirement, and traveled with family and friends whenever possible. He also made time to serve as a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and as Deputy Mayor for the Village of Thomaston.

As a person of faith, Dad made time to be of service, joining the Counting Team at St. Mary’s, and feeling glad for the company and light-hearted humor.

In 2015, Dad became a widower when our mother passed away; he has wished to be with her all of his remaining days.  And, on July 23, 2023, he died at home and in peace, ready to be with our mother again.

James is survived by siblings Maura (Frank), John (Margaret) and Eileen (Joseph) as well as by daughters Kathleen and Clare (Michael), grand daughter Jane, and many cousins, great nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Thursday, July 27, 2023 2pm to 7pm at Fairchild Sons, 1570 Northern Boulevard. Mass will be celebrated on July 28, 2023 at 10:15am at Church of St. Mary, 1300 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY. Interment will be held privately at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.  And, be generous toward our service veterans, supporting the work of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
