Obituary of Victor and Alice Wu

Please share a memory of Victor and Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Alice Mai Kit Wu, 76, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2023, surrounded by her family. She lived in Great Neck, New York for over 40 years.  She is survived by her husband Victor; her brothers, Lawrence and Jimmy; son Paul, daughter Teresa, and five grandchildren, Stephen, Calvin, Michael, Connor, and Julia.

Alice was born on September 1, 1946, the youngest of three children to the late Kin Lau and Wai Chun Lau. She was born in Guangzhou, China, and grew up in Hong Kong, where she graduated from Pooi To Middle School and earned a bachelors degree in biology from Hong Kong Baptist University.  While in Hong Kong, she met Victor Wu in 1968. They married in 1969. They moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where Paul and Teresa were born. Then in 1977, they moved to New York.

For 37 years, Alice worked for the US Postal Service in the Whitestone, Queens distribution center. She was a trusted colleague and later a respected manager, sometimes referred to affectionately as “the general”.   In retirement, Alice was an avid gardener, always tending to her beloved begonias, petunias, peonies, and irises.  She devoted herself to caring for her two younger grandchildren, Connor and Julia, thereby allowing Teresa to continue her career as a research scientist in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry.

Alice cherished her family, her parents, her siblings, and her friends. She was an energetic and hard-working person and was very dedicated to the people around her.  Alice was a loving and faithful wife to husband Victor, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a valued friend and confidant, remembered by all for her genuine warmth and kindness as well as her rational, practical, thoughtful advice.  She will be dearly missed.

Victor Yuwen Wu, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. He lived in Great Neck, NY, for over 40 years. He is survived by his brothers Frank, John, sister Jenny, son Paul, daughter Teresa, and five grandchildren Stephen, Calvin, Michael, Connor, and Julia.

Victor was born on December 23, 1934 in Enping, China. He was the second of four sons to the late Reverend Hung-Sen Wu and Oi-Kei Poon, and half brother to two sisters and two brothers. Victor earned a bachelors degree in chemistry from Beijing University, and received his PhD in inorganic chemistry and x-ray crystallography from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964. In the same year, he was also inducted into the Society of the Sigma Xi, which is devoted to the promotion of research in science. Victor studied the high durability of metal alloys, which contributed towards the improvement of turbine blades for aviation. In his career, he was a research scientist, a lecturer at several universities, and later on, ran a small computer business.

In retirement, Victor enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables in the garden, taught himself how to play the piano, and had a talent for fixing appliances and cars. Victor was tri-lingual - fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.

A private graveside service and burial was held at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Great Neck, NY, attended by his immediate family. At his request, the service was private.

A celebration of life will be held at Fairchild Sons Chapel on June 17, for family and friends.
