Obituary of Audriene Barry

Audriene Gertrude (Carlin) Barry, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at her home in Manhasset, New York. Born on Staten Island, New York, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude and Arthur Carlin. Audriene was the beloved wife of the late Bertrand “Bert” F. Barry with whom she shared 66 years of marriage.

Audriene attended Curtis High School on Staten Island, and earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Hunter College in New York City. She was a trailblazer, being one of a very small select number of female police officers sworn into the New York City Police Department in 1955. After marrying Bert, she devoted her life to raising their five children on Staten Island. Audriene was renowned for her cooking, generosity, warmth, wisdom and laughter. She was active in Blessed Sacrament Church as a member of the Rosary Altar Society and choir. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Above all else, Audriene was a devoted mother and the thread that tied the family together.

Audriene is survived by four children, three daughters and their husbands, Patricia Barry, MD (John Cosgrove, MD), Kathleen Poss, PhD (Michael Poss, PhD), and Clare Skarda (Gregory Skarda), and one son and his wife, Bertrand Barry, JD (Anne-Marie Barry), nine grandchildren: John, Susan, Patrick, Matthew, Laura, Brian, Katherine, Charlotte and Victoria, and two great-grandchildren: John “Jack” and Callan “Cal”. “Auntie-O” will also be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews.

Audriene is predeceased by her husband, Bert, who died two months earlier on January 1, 2023, and son, Arthur, a NYC firefighter who perished in the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001.

Family and friends are invited to attend a two-hour visitation on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Fairchild Sons Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY 11030 from 12 pm-2 pm. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023 at St. Mary’s Church, 1300 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY 11030 at 10:15 am. A burial service will be held at Moravian Cemetery, 2205 Richmond Rd, Staten Island, NY 10306 at 12:30 pm.
