Obituary of Mary Jayne Dreyer

Please share a memory of Mary Jayne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Jayne Dreyer, “Moj / Mojie”, a long-time resident of Manhasset, NY, passed away on July 15, 2021, surrounded by her family after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma / Plasma Cell Leukemia. Mary Jayne was the beloved wife of Douglas E. Dreyer and mother of Douglas F. Dreyer and Grace C. Dreyer. She is survived by five siblings: Kathleen De’Rossi (Norwalk, CT), William Spellman (Cary, NC), Karen Zachacz (Punta Gorda, FL), Geri-Lynn Sullivan (Flanders, NJ), Therese Schumacher (Danbury, CT) and 23 nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents William Spellman and Jayne Turko Spellman, and siblings Michael and John.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday July 21st from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, Manhasset, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 22nd, at 10:15 AM at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Manhasset, NY.

Mary Jayne was born June 9th, 1963, in Harrison, NY, lived briefly in Vienna, Austria and returned to Katonah, NY in 1974. Mary Jayne graduated from John F. Kennedy High School (with honors) in Somers, NY. She was a superior athlete in volleyball and track and still holds the school record in the 440-meter hurdles. She graduated from Siena College, as a student-athlete in volleyball, in Loudonville, NY, with a 4.0 GPA in Math and went on to earn her MBA from Pace University. She was recruited by AT&T for their Executive Sales and Marketing Program. In 1997, Mary Jayne married Doug Dreyer and welcomed two children: Douglas, a 2021 graduate of Georgetown University and Grace, a rising senior at Boston College.

Mary Jayne retired from AT&T to raise her children and later became a member of the Manhasset Lakeville Fire and Water District team located in Great Neck, NY. She was responsible for Payroll and Benefits, loved her job and viewed her cohorts as family. The wonderful MLWD team brought her much joy and she worked there until her death.

Mary Jayne briefly coached the Manhasset High School volleyball team and was a strong supporter of the Manhasset High School Crew team. She related to the athletes with her positive attitude and sense of humour. She loved to watch her children compete and was cherished by athletes, parents, and coaches alike.

She was a beautiful woman but an even more beautiful person who could light up a room with her smile, honesty, and grace. She was pure of heart and never spoke an unkind word about anyone. She fought this sinister disease courageously, without complaint and with deep love from her family. Mojie was a wonderful wife, fantastic mother, loving sibling, and deep friend to all. While she can now rest from her fight, she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

“Those we love don’t go away, they step beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near.”

The family asks, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Manhasset Lakeville Fire Welfare Fund, Aux. Company. No. 1 & 2 INC., PO Box 412, Manhasset NY 11030.
