Obituary of Thomas A. Adams

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
After 96 years of a wonderful life, Thomas A. Adams passed away at Northport’s VA Hospital on October 13, 2016. Born in Astoria, NY, Tom attended Flushing High School and Seton Hall College, NJ where he played football. During World War II, Tom enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp where he served in the South Pacific, particularly on Guadalcanal with the 1st Division, Raider battalion. He was wounded on Guam and later discharged at the rank of Sergeant. For thirteen years he served the City of New York as a police officer and detective. He then formed his own equipment rental business, which his son Thomas still runs. A long time resident of Manhasset, Tom coached Pop Warner football, enjoyed golfing, smoking cigars, discussing politics, organizing Marine Corps reunions for his battalions, and rooting for Notre Dame football. Recently, his most cherished activities included Long Island’s Honor Flight to the World War II Memorial and a personal tour of the Marine Corp Museum in Virginia. He also supported small charities that touched his gruff heart. Tom’s greatest pleasure was having his family all around him. He is predeceased by his parents, two brothers and three sisters, and his dear wife of 50 years, Catherine (Kitty) M. Adams. He is survived by his three children: Moira Adams McCole and husband Brian, Bridget, and son Thomas and grandsons Padraic McCole and Tyler Adams. He is also survived by his cousin, Sr. Josephine Adams and countless nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, with a great-grandniece on the way. The wake will be on Sunday, October 16 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Fairchild & Sons, 1570 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030. A 10 am funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Northern Blvd. Manhasset, on Monday, October 17. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his honor to the U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Palliative Unit at Northport Medical Center, 79 Middleville Road, Northport, NY 11768-2200.
