Obituary of Elizabeth J. Heffernan

Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Former Manhasset resident Elizabeth “Liz” Heffernan (McGoldrick) of Boca Raton, FL, passed away on the morning of June 30. She spent her final days in the company of her adoring husband, Raymond, of Boca Raton, FL; loving daughters, Tara (Jonathan) Holtaway of Vienna, VA and Anne of Catonsville, MD; affectionate sister, Mary Oliver of Pompano Beach, FL, and devoted niece, Sheila Mahon of Boca Raton, FL. The first of her family to be born in the US, Liz grew up in Rego Park, Queens. After graduating from St. Michael’s Academy in Manhattan, she continued her education at Fordham University in The Bronx. There, she earned her bachelor’s in elementary education before going on to earn her master’s in the same field at Hofstra University. Liz devoted her life to teaching the children of New York City. Her career as a New York City schoolteacher included assignments at PS 214 and PS 123, both in Brooklyn, as well as PS 178 in Queens. She was dedicated to her vocation, her students and particularly to sharing the gift of literacy with her pupils as well as her passion for reading. In October 1969, Liz married Raymond Heffernan of Jackson Heights, Queens, at St. Francis de Sales church in Belle Harbor, Queens. They moved to Manhasset with their two young daughters in 1974 and remained there until 2004, when they moved to Boca Raton and purchased a summer residence in Port Washington, NY. In addition to those family members who were with her when she passed, Liz is survived by her brother, John (Theresa Pasko) McGoldrick, brother-in-law James (Ellen O’Sullivan) Heffernan, six nieces and nephews, eleven great nieces and nephews and three grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, 34 Washington Street Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481. (781) 237-3800 www.curealz.org
