Calliopi “Popi” Fragou Born March 25, 1924 Died December 29, 2015 Burial Service Father Dennis Strouzas Archangel Michael Church Popi Fragou, 91 years of age, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Born in Athens, Greece on March 25, 1924 to Ioannis and Katerina Fragou. Through the years she lived in Athens, Rome, and New York. Graduated from the Teacher’s College of Athens. Following graduation, she lived in Greece during the tumultuous times of World War II and the German Occupation. In 1946 she married her husband Nicolas Lambathakis and they had three children, Makis, Chris and Catherine. When her son, Makis married an Italian woman, she picked up a self study guide to learn Italian and lived in Italy with his family for some time. Later on, once moving to New York, at 55 years of age, she went to school and learned the english language. She was asked to teach at the Greek Community school of The Cathedral in Hempstead, eventually establishing the Panagia of Island Park Greek School. She taught the Greek language, religion, history and dance for 12 years. After moving to the North Shore of Long Island she worked at the Bryant Library of Roslyn until she was 79. She spent the majority of her time reading, knitting, crocheting, cooking and baking. All her friends and family loved to receive her famous sweets just as much as she enjoyed giving them. We will most definitely be missing the Baklava made by Popi! An unparalleled character, she appreciated and followed tradition, even though she was a rebel at heart. Popi is survived by her son Makis and his wife Silvia, her daughters Chris and Catherine, grandchildren Roberto, Nicolas, Christina, and Katiana and her husband Jim, and great-grandchildren Viola, Kairos, Daphne, and all who called her Yiayia.
