JOSEPHINE A. MONAT

Born:

December 2, 1927

Died:

November 6, 2018

Josephine A. Monat (nee

Sclafani) passed away

peacefully on November 6,

2018 in New York following a

brief illness.

Josephine was born on

December 2, 1927 in Brooklyn,

New York. She earned her Bachelor's degree

from Hunter College, Magna Cum Laude, and

a Master's Degree in Political Science and

Public Administration from Wayne State

University, where she met her late husband,

William R. Monat. Jo and Bill were married in

1951.

Jo was a devoted wife and loving mother to

five children. Josephine dedicated her life to

helping others, most importantly her family,

but many were blessed with her giving and

caring nature. Later in life Josephine returned

to college and earned a registered nursing

degree. True to her character, Josephine

served as a nurse at the State of Illinois

Mental Health Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, for

many years until her retirement, blessing

many mentally ill patients with her loving

care.

She quietly was a source of strength and

wisdom to her late husband, Bill throughout

his life and career, including his tenure as

President of Northern Illinois University,

which Bill and Jo truly cherished.

Josephine is survived by her children, Lise

(Dale) Lunde, Kathy Mocilan, Margaret (Vic)

Linell, William (Jean) Monat and Eric (Suset)

Monat; as well as her brothers, Gus (Rose)

Sclafani and Salvatore (Karin) Sclafani. She is

also survived by 12 grandchildren and 4 great

grandchildren, and many nephews and

nieces.

In retirement, Jo cherished being a loving

grandmother and spending time with family.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to

the William R. Monat Scholarship Fund, c/o
