Obituary of Dr. Jaime Yun

Please share a memory of Dr. Jaime to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Devoted father, loving husband, loyal friend and gifted surgeon Jaime Yun’s love of life didn't come to an end with his death; rather, it will live on forever. Jaime passed away on June 16, 2023 at the age of 56 after an unexpected brain injury. He was surrounded by his family who will honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Jaime was born in Venezuela and later moved to Colombia with his parents and five brothers. They immigrated from Colombia to New York in the 1970s. He knew he had fully mastered English when he stopped dreaming in Spanish. He effortlessly excelled in school; he was the valedictorian at Immaculate Conception Elementary School and later completed his high school education at Bronx Science.

Jaime completed his bachelor’s degree at Columbia University, graduating summa cum laude. He attended New York University Medical school to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Jaime’s pride was raising his children and helping people. Jaime cared deeply for the people around him. He knew he wanted to be a doctor at a young age and make an impact on the lives of many.

Jaime was a brilliant individual. A professor nicknamed him “99” in medical school because his score on an exam was in the 99th percentile. He loved to be in the operating room and teach medical residents to be a better version of themselves.

Family was everything to Jaime and his children were the light of his life. He beamed with pride after both his kids attended his alma mater and was excited to talk about his days as a Lion. He visited campus often in the past five years to hang out at his son’s fraternity house and watch his daughter play lacrosse. Jaime was an enthusiastic spectator and his excitement was contagious to many people on the sidelines. He had a quirky sense of humor and was usually the first one to laugh at his own jokes.

Jaime and his wife Tyan met during their middle school years. They were friends at first but their bond matured as he tutored her in calculus and enjoyed being the “smarter” one.
His interests were expansive from reading about woodworking to learning more about the financial and real estate sector and most recently, bingeing Korean dramas on Netflix. He was also a passionate food lover and thoroughly enjoyed eating and cooking all kinds of foods but if it didn’t include all the essential ingredients, it wasn’t worth eating or making.

Jaime is survived by his wife, Tyan; his children Christopher and Lauren; his five brothers, Alfonso, Julio, Enrique, Fernando and Jairo, their wives and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Yen Yu Yun Chang and Cecilia Yun Yee.

Visitation and tribute will be held at Fairchild Sons in Manhasset on Friday, June 23, 2023.  A private graveside service and burial will be held at Flushing Cemetery on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
