Obituary of William E. Viklund

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William E. Viklund, 81 years of age, passed away on February 2nd, 2022; Beloved husband of Joyce (Larson) for 59 years. Father of Mark, David and Andrea. Cherished father-in-law of Maggie and Traci.  Adored Papa of Andrew, Amanda, Mark Jr., Alexandra, Kelly and Chloe.

William was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Bay Ridge. His parents, Edvin Viklund and Ingegerd Viklund (Kvarnström) were both born in the Åland Islands, Finland. He is survived by many cousins in Europe as well as many cousins here in the US. He is predeceased by his only sibling, Dorothy.

William spent his career in the real estate and banking industry, beginning as an appraiser with the Dime Savings Bank and later as head of the real estate department at Bankers Trust Company. He served as President of The Long Island Savings Bank for 16 years until his retirement in 1996.

William had many interests, among of them classical music, history books, and, of course, sports. He was very upset when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved west. He loved golf, even though he would admit he wasn’t very good at it. He loved all things Scandinavian and especially enjoyed the holiday traditions.

Most of all, he loved his family. His wife, children and grandchildren were the loves of his life. He had many adventures — traveling to many places all over the world — with Joyce chasing behind him. Among the highlight of his travels were the yearly cruises taken with the whole family. Those memories were the best.

He lived in Plandome Manor for 49 years and was a member of the Plandome Country Club and the Garden City Golf Club. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend to many. He will forever be loved and missed.

Visiting hours will be on Sunday, February 6th from 2-6 pm at Fairchild Sons Inc. in Manhasset. Private interment at Locust Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of William to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
