Joan Flanagan was born Joan Elder January 7th 1926 in Cleethorpes England to the parents of James and Cecily (Fiske) Elder. As a young girl Joan's passion for art and life surpassed all. She attended secondary school majoring in art prior to the outbreak of WW2. A testament of her strong will was her ability to continue with her artistic talents after being diagnosed with Macular Degeneration disease. She continued with that passion the rest of her life. At the outbreak of WW2 fate led her to the dance halls were she came across the love of her life and soulmate, Staff SGT Thomas Flanagan. After the war Joan travelled to America and married Tom in 1948. They had 2 children, Thomas and Terrence in Jackson Heights NY and moved to Mineola NY in 1955 and had two more children, Stephen and Kevin. Joan was very active in her community as a member of the Jolly Girls, Corpus Christi Church and Chaminade High School were her four boys attended. Tom and Joan were honored by Chaminade High School as Founders. After the loss of her husband in 2003, she eventually moved into the Amsterdam in Port Washington. Joan continued with her love for life participating in many activities, Tai-Chi, line dancing, exercise class and art.
