Obituary of Mary Ellen Gately

On May 11, 2019, after battling mesothelioma for three years, Mary Ellen Gately, a long time Manhasset, NY resident, peacefully passed away in her Toms Point, Port Washington, NY home with her husband Martin by her side comforting her. 

 

Mary Ellen was born on February 1, 1945, to Mary and John Moran.  She was raised in Manhasset and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Marymount College, and received her Master's in Fine Arts from SUNY New Paltz.  In 1969, Mary Ellen married Martin Joseph Gately.  Mary Ellen and Marty had four children, all of whom graduated from Manhasset High School.  For over two decades she was the co-proprietor of The Little Shop ‘Round the Corner.  Friends and family will remember her creativity and unique sense of humor. She had a compassionate heart that made those around her feel loved.   Mary Ellen was a devout Catholic and a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s RC Church.

 

In addition to her parents, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her sisters Carol Ann and Virginia Moran. 

 

She is survived by her Husband, Martin, her four children, and their spouses; Megan Trotta (Marzio) of Manhasset, NY, Patrick Gately (Cara Martens) of Darien, CT, Kelly Gersen (Ted) of Portsmouth, RI, and Sean Gately (Tara Hines) of Rockville Centre, NY, her thirteen Grandchildren; Brigid, Erin, Kelly, Brendan, Jack, Molly, Teddy, Patrick, Ryan, Connor, Colin, Kiera, and Caroline and her brother Jack Moran. 

 

Visiting hours are on Thursday, May 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at The Fairchild Funeral Chapel at 1570 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s RC Church at 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset on Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. with interment to follow.
