Obituary of Timothy M. Dowd

Please share a memory of Timothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Timothy M. Dowd, a resident of Manhasset, NY, passed away on February 22, 2019.  He was 78.  Timothy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and is survived by many extended family members who cherished him deeply.

Timothy was married to Janice S. (Mihalko) Dowd for over 51 years, with whom he raised two children, Timothy F., who predeceased him in September 2016, and Jennifer, who in his last days remained at his side along with his wife, Janice.  Timothy is also survived by three grandchildren, Aidan, Taidgh, and Maggie, and his loving sister, Mary Anne Donohue of Fairfield, CT.  Timothy was predeceased by his siblings, Margaret Rahner and Dennis Dowd.

Timothy was born to Denis F. Dowd and Mary (Gallagher) Dowd in New York City, on November 10, 1940.  He was a graduate of Power Memorial Academy, received his Bachelor's Degree from St. John's University, and received a Master's Degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Timothy served with the New York City Police Department for over 41 years, retiring from the Detective Bureau, Queens North Homicide Squad, as the senior ranking Sergeant at the time in the NYPD.  His career spanned from the "call box" to the computer.  Timothy worked as a Detective in the Queens District Attorney's Office under District Attorney Thomas Mackell, as well as in multiple police precincts, and participated in a number of high profile homicide investigations during his time on the job.

In addition, Timothy taught Criminal Justice at several Tri-State area universities, and was considered an expert on Organized Crime and the role of intelligence in investigations.  He was a contributor to the reference publication, "Criminal and Civil Investigation Handbook".

Timothy most enjoyed spending time skiing with his family in Windham, NY, where he owned a second home with his wife.  In addition, Timothy enjoyed Boy Scout camping trips with his son, Timmy, who was a scout in Plandome Troop 71.  Timothy also served as Assistant Scoutmaster with the Troop.  Each year, Timothy looked forward to marching in the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade with Power Memorial Academy Alumni, and was proud of his Irish heritage.  He was a member of the Manhasset Men's Club and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Timothy was an avid fan of the NY Mets, NY Jets, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.
