Obituary of Synos Mangazva

Please share a memory of Synos to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Synos Simon Mudavahnu Mangazva, 82, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018. Born in Gutu, Zimbabwe to Kwangware and Mapingudzeni Mangazva, he came to the U.S. in 1963 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at The University of Pennsylvania and received a Master’s degree at The New School For Social Research.

He worked as a Professor of Economics at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York.  He believed education is the gateway to unlocking the world and a passport to freedom. In 2016, he retired after 42 years of challenging his students to excel and was diagnosed with an aggressive stage of throat cancer shortly thereafter.

Synos was a voracious bibliophile, as his family and friends could attest too based on the many books that filled his home. He could often be found on a Sunday morning reading the NY Times and The Economist. He was an avid sports fan, and though painful at times, especially enjoyed cheering on the Mets and the Knicks with his wife and daughters. At 6’2 he was a strong, towering and distinguished man but to his family, he was a gentle giant, always steering the ship.

Synos will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Doris and their daughters, Ngonidzashe and Mirirai, and his daughters Louisa, Remina and Charity. Synos is also survived by his six grandchildren and his sisters, Remina, Ngonidzashe, and Mirirai and by brother Rabson.

Visitation will be at Fairchild Sons Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, NY 11030, on Friday, July 20th from 3:00PM to
7:00PM.
