Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

~~Jean Veronica Tarpey

Jean V. (Deery) Tarpey, 95, passed away on September 8, 2017. Jean was born on March 20, 1922 in Seafield, Scotland. She was the daughter of John and Ann Deery and sister to John Francis Deery. Jean came to America when she was twelve-years-old and adopted her new country for the many opportunities it gave her.
Jean graduated from Hunter college and got her Masters Degree in Nutrition from New York University. She focused her career as a nutritionist. She taught at both the high school and college levels and retired from North Shore University Hospital as Chief Clinical Dietitian. She missed work and worked for a time at St. Mary's in Bayside, Queens. Jean loved lecturing and helping others improve their overall health by eating right.
On November 17, 1951 Jean married the love of her life, John J. Tarpey, and raised five children with him. Jean is survived by her children Kenneth, Jeanne Marie, Eleanor, Elizabeth, and John Peter. She also was a grandmother to twelve grandchildren: Caroline, Conor, Peter, Joseph, James, Sarah, Kenneth, Michael, Kathleen, Daniel, Jack, and Dylan.
Jean lived a very full life. Her faith was very important to her. She was active in the Saint Mary's choir and loved singing at Mass. Jean also enjoyed singing with the Port Washington Singers as well. After retiring, Jean spent time with her family and friends. She loved to travel and went on trips to Italy, Ireland, and Scotland. The highlight of her Italy trip was a private audience with the Pope. Jean later spent her winters in Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Saint Mary's Church, Manhasset, New York at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York. Visitation will be held September 13, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Fairchild Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd, Manhasset, New York.
