Obituary of Dr. Anthony Vasilas

Dr. Anthony Vasilas, Manhasset resident for 50 years, died on April 7, 2017, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 65 years and childhood sweetheart Sophie (nee Pappas) and his daughter Paula Roussos. He is survived by his son Peter (Sharon) Vasilas, his daughter Constance (Ramon) Parsons, his son in law Sakis Roussos, his grandchildren Alethea (Josh), Raymond (Juli), Anthony (Jessie), Evanthia (Steven), Sophia (Ryan), Thalia (George), Theodosia, Harris, Richard, Antonia, Paulina, his great grandchildren Will and Owen, his sister Elpis Chandras, and brother in law Nicholas (Alexandra) Pappas . Anthony, a graduate of Columbia College, received his medical degree from New York Medical College. He served in the Navy on Governers Island and Washington, D.C. during the Korean War and later became the Chairman of the Radiology Department at Beekman Downtown Hospital where he practiced until his retirement. He was a founder and President of the Archangel Michael and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Churches, an Archon and a lifetime member of AHEPA. He helped to revitalize the Hellenic Medical Society of New York, served as its President and was committed to medical education and philanthropic causes. Anthony was the son of Peter and Sophia Vasilas, who immigrated from Mytilene, Greece. He learned the value of hard work growing up in his father’s diner, which provided a foundation for his life. He was a positive force for many and beloved by all. His wake Monday April 10, 4:00-8:00 PM and funeral service Tuesday April 11, 9:30 AM will be held at the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 100 Fairway Drive in Port Washington, NY 11050. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church and the Hellenic Medical Society of New York Scholarship Fund, 60 Plaza Street East, Brooklyn, NY 11238.
