Obituary of George B. Motchkavitz

George B. Motchkavitz May 27, 1927-December 7, 2016 George Motchkavitz was born in Great Neck, actually delivered in the house where he and his wife Dorothy resided till his passing. The house was built by his father, John. Born on May 27, 1927, he enlisted with his twin brother Lenny in the US Navy on March 13, 1945 during World War II. They were stationed together at the Navy airfield, Waldron Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1946, He returned to Great Neck and joined the Alert Fire Company in September 1946. He partnered with Lenny and his brother-in-law John Pothlanski to form M&P Plumbing and Heating, Inc., which is where they worked for 50 years. George recently completed 70 years of active service with the Alerts. He attained the rank of Chief and President of the Alerts, along with serving numerous decades on the Board of Trustees. George and Dorothy raised 3 children, George, Diane and John (Dawn) in Great Neck, with George and John following in their father’s footsteps as current members of the Alert Fire Company. He was also a proud grandfather to Garrett (Ashley), Ryan and Julia and great-grandfather to Loretta. Ryan and Julia are current Alert Junior Firefighters, with Ryan completing his role as captain this month and joining the senior fire company in January, carrying on a proud Motchkavitz tradition. As a true lifelong Great Neck resident, George was proud to serve and protect his community. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, he is survived by his twin Lenny, younger brother Ronald and wife Joan, many nephews, nieces, godchildren and friends. In lieu of flowers or food donations, a scholarship fund is being set up in his name.
